At lunchtime, while the kettle was boiling, I glanced out of the window, and saw a flock of sparrows milling about on the path. They were still there when I returned with the camera.
They were eating seed spilt from the hanging feeder you can just see the bottom of, by the post on the left.
A solitary starling was chased away from the seed on the ground. It went to wash in the bird-bath at the far end of the path, and was again surrounded by sparrows.
Then 3 collared doves arrived.
There have not been a lot of birds to be seen in the garden recently, apart from the regular breakfast time pair of dunnocks.
That's the trunk/stem of Mme Alfred Carriere in the lower picture, on the right.

We get the most amazing variety of birds in the garden of our Manchester flats. But we have never seen one single sparrow, which is very upsetting.
Did you know that dunnocks are very randy?
I could chase the collared doves away if you need that doing, Stitch.
Then the dropped seed would grow into exotic grasses next year.
Please notice how Murph and I synchronised our comments at 6.27pm precisely.
This takes a great deal of practice.
kaz - dunno about randy dunnocks - they always seem quite well behaved on our premises.
murph - spaniels next door and over the back don't put the doves off. And I check growth from random seeds carefully - don't want anything illegal coming up!
Love the synchronised commenting - new for the next Olympics?
How do I attract peacocks into to my garden? I'm trying to get one up on my neighbours
Get a peahen?
They are noisy creatures, I believe, on a par with geese and donkeys.
Best viewed strolling across acres of terrace, sweeping drive, and half a mile of lawn leading to a ha-ha, don't you think?
Or does that actually describe your garden?
Sadly it doesn't, but you have a point so I might look for that house you describe at the weekend.
I don't mind the noise. Where do I find a peahen?
I have got all 17 Randy Dunnocks Country & Western CD's.
Ready Kaz, .....GO!
Huh! That's another rubbish sport we won't medal (or meddle) in!!
Isn't there a song about this?
